'You Don't Have A Clue': Nick Ferrari Skewers Minister For Not Knowing Details Of His Own Announcement
Nick Ferrari looks on, unimpressed, after Jonathan Reynolds forgets key details of statutory paternity payNick Ferrari slammed Jonathan Reynolds live on air this morning as it emerged the cabinet minister did not know an essential fact behind his own announcement.The business and trade secretary was speaking to the media today to promote the government’s new review into parental leave, along with maternity and paternity pay.But Reynolds’ interview on LBC started to fall apart as soon as presenter Ferrari drilled down on the details.The host asked: “How much do you get a week [if you get statutory paternity pay]?”Reynolds said: “Nick, my youngest is 10, so I’m not really sure what the statutory is anymore.”Ferrari hit back: “Do you not think you should know what the statutory leave in this country is, if this a very important piece of work as you said right at the top.“Mr Reynolds, shouldn’t you know what it is?”The minister began: “I should, to be honest with you Nick, I must apologise to you –”Ferrari cut in: ”– Apologise to the listeners!”Reynolds continued: “It is quite a while since my youngest was born.”Ferrari replied: “Yes but you are launching this initiative today aren’t you, you’re talking about how you want to look at the possibility of extended parental leave and you don’t have a clue as to what we’re currently paying.”After a little more back and forth Ferrari brought their painful exchange to a close, by finally pointing out statutory paternity leave is £187.18 a week.Reynolds just replied: “When I come on your show, I never try and con you if you catch me out...”'But you're launching this initiative today...and you don't have a clue as to how much we're currently paying?''I apologise...'Labour is reviewing parental leave, but Jonathan Reynolds is unable to tell @NickFerrariLBC how much statutory paternity pay is. pic.twitter.com/CN9pNgfPTU— LBC (@LBC) July 1, 2025The UK offers new dads two weeks on less than half the minimum wage – and nothing for self-employed fathers.It has subsequently been described as the least generous paternity offer in Europe.In the government’s official press release, Reynolds said: “Campaigners have long called for change, and this government has listened.
