This crime author knows Glasgow has two nations: the rich and the poor
In Duke Street, Dennistoun, twelve-year-old Gerard Macklin lunges for Margaret Camberg’s purse, knocking her to the ground and leaving her with concussion, a broken collarbone and a fractured hip. Gerard meant no harm, not really. The opening pages have shown us what a grim hand he’s been dealt. His mother is a drug addict, spending most of her time in a daze, negligent and emotionally unavailable. Gerard has had to step up to look after his younger brother Anthony and baby sister Miranda, and with no electricity, food or nappy cream in their flat Margaret’s purse proved to be too much of a temptation.
