Are we really witnessing a ballooning mental health crisis?
ONCE considered the Cinderella of healthcare, mental wellbeing is emerging from the shadows. Thanks partly to campaigns such as the upcoming Mental Health Awareness Week (May 12-18), people now talk more openly about a subject once shrouded in shame, fear or derision, and hardly a week goes by without some public figure announcing their recently identified condition. Meanwhile, issues such as anxiety, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are among the hottest topics on the Fringe comedy circuit. And everyone, it seems, is an armchair analyst, confidently unmasking their boss, their president or their neighbour as narcissistic, sociopathic or “somewhere on the spectrum”.
