Letters: Fairness for trans people will prevail – but why must it take so long?

In the 1980s and 90s, one priority for us LGBT campaigners was an equal age of consent – the age was 21 for gay men, and 16 for everyone else. Opposing campaigners, and much of the media, said an equal age would put young men at risk. That ignored the fact that countries surrounding us in Europe had had an equal age for years or decades, with no risk materialising. Needless to say, when the age was finally equalised in 2001, the last country in Europe to do so, none of the supposed risks happened here either.
