Democrats help stop censure of GOP Rep. Cory Mills, saving his committee seats

A group of House Democrats voted with Republicans on Wednesday to defeat a measure that would have kicked embattled Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) off the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees. Why it matters: The measure was forced to a vote by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-La.), making this an extremely rare moment of party infighting stemmed by bipartisan cooperation.106 Democrats voted with 204 Republicans to refer the measure to the House Ethics Committee, which announced an investigation into Mills on Wednesday shortly before the vote. The measure, which also would have censured Mills, and the investigation are focused on allegations of domestic abuse, stolen valor and financial misconduct, all of which Mills denies.By the numbers: The motion to refer the censure measure passed 310 to 103, with another dozen members voting present.Eight Republicans and 95 Democrats voted to advance the measure to a final vote in the House.Lawmakers in both parties have grown uncomfortable with the increasingly frequent use of censure as a political tool.Zoom in: Reps. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Harriet Hageman (R-Wyo.), Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) and Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) were the Republicans who voted against quashing the censure measure.Among the Democrats who voted to save Mills were former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.).Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.), who was indicted Wednesday on allegations of funneling $5 million in FEMA money to her congressional campaign, did not vote.Editor's note: This story has been updated with additional reporting.
