Deputy attorney general meets with Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said he met with Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell on Thursday. The big picture: The Trump administration has been facing mounting pressure over its handling of the case as well as bipartisan calls to release all its documents on Epstein.A House Oversight Committee this week subpoenaed Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence in Florida for sex trafficking, to testify at a deposition.Driving the news: "Today, I met with Ghislaine Maxwell, and I will continue my interview of her tomorrow" Blanche said in a post on X. "The Department of Justice will share additional information about what we learned at the appropriate time," he added. What they're saying: Maxwell's attorney, David Oscar Markus, told reporters Blanche "took a full day and asked a lot of questions."She "answered every single question," Markus said. "She never stopped. She never invoked a privilege. She never declined to answer. She answered all the questions truthfully, honestly and to the best of her ability."Context: Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 after a federal jury found her guilty of multiple counts of conspiring to sex traffic minors. She has denied abusing anyone and said she has been made a scapegoat after Epstein died while in prison in 2019, a charge prosecutors have rejected.Maxwell petitioned the Supreme Court to review her case, arguing it violated a non-prosecution agreement between Epstein and federal prosecutors in Florida. The DOJ urged the high court to reject that appeal earlier this month.More from Axios: What are the Epstein files?
