Joint Base Andrews investigates "suspicious package" after multiple people fall ill

"Multiple" people at Joint Base Andrews fell ill after a "suspicious package" was sent to the Maryland military facility, a U.S. military spokesperson said early Friday.The big picture: CNN first reported on Thursday's incident that the spokesperson told Axios resulted in two buildings being evacuated as a precaution at the base outside D.C. that's often used by President Trump and other top U.S. officials.Zoom in: "Multiple individuals felt ill" after a person opened the package, said Matt Ebarb, a spokesperson for the 316th Wing of the U.S. Air Force at the base, in his emailed statement."They were evaluated and treated by JBA medical personnel, determined to be in stable condition and released today," Ebarb said."As a precaution, the building and connecting building were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area," he added."Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and normal operations have resumed."What we're watching: Ebarb said an investigation had been opened into the incident.CNN reported that the package "contained an unknown white powder," citing two sources familiar with the investigation.
