Khamenei to Trump: Iran will not surrender
Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei said in a televised speech that the Islamic Republic "will not surrender" and threatened that if the U.S. takes military action against Iran, "it will undoubtedly cause irreparable consequences to them."Why it matters: Khamenei's message was his first response to the demand made by President Trump on Tuesday for the nation's "unconditional surrender." Trump is considering joining Israel's war against Iran and ordering military strikes to take out Iran's nuclear program. What he is saying: "The Iranian nation stands firm against an imposed war, just as it will stand firm against an imposed peace, and this nation will not surrender to anyone in the face of imposition," Khamenei said in his speech. Khamenei added: "Intelligent people who know Iran, the Iranian nation, and its history will never speak to this nation in threatening language because the Iranian nation will not surrender, and the Americans should know that any U.S. military intervention will undoubtedly cause irreparable harm to them."Driving the news: Trump convened a situation room meeting with his top national security advisers on Tuesday to discuss U.S. policy towards the war between Israel and Iran. After the meeting he spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump signaled his thinking in a series of threatening posts on Truth Social ahead of the Situation Room meeting."We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran. Iran had good sky trackers and other defensive equipment, and plenty of it, but it doesn't compare to American made," Trump wrote.A few minutes later he warned Khamenei against targeting U.S. forces in the Middle East."We know exactly where the so-called 'Supreme Leader' is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there - We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now. But we don't want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin," Trump wrote. In a third post in less than an hour Trump wrote: "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER"
