Minnesota lawmakers shot in targeted home attacks

Two Democratic state legislators in Minnesota were shot at their respective suburban Twin Cities homes early Saturday in what Gov. Tim Walz characterized as "targeted" attacks, multiple news outlets and lawmakers reported. What we know: DFL Sen. John Hoffman was shot at his Champlin residence and House DFL House Leader Melissa Hortman was shot at her Brooklyn Park home, KARE 11, KSTP and other news outlets confirmed Saturday morning. Authorities hadn't publicly identified the victims as of 9:30 am local time. But multiple lawmakers posted statements online identifying Hoffman and Hortman as the victims.The latest: Walz said on X that he had been briefed on the "targeted shootings in Champlin and Brooklyn Park" and that the Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement were on the scene.His office announced that he will hold a "public safety briefing to address violence targeted at legislators" at 9:30 am central.Context: Hortman, 55, served as House speaker from 2019 until this year, when she assumed the role of DFL leader amid a rare House tie.Hoffman, 60, chairs the Senate's Human Services committee and represents the northwest Twin Cities suburbs.Situational awareness: The Brooklyn Park Police Department issued a shelter in place order in a 3-mile radius of Edinburgh Golf in Brooklyn Park course early Saturday.What they're saying: House Speaker Lisa Demuth (R-Cold Spring) said on X that she is "shocked and horrified by the evil attack that took place overnight."" Please lift up in prayer the victims, as well as the law enforcement personnel working to apprehend the perpetrator," she wrote."I am devastated to hear of the targeted shootings of State Senator John Hoffman and House Speaker Melissa Hortman," U.S. Rep.
