Rep. Andrew Garbarino wins key vote in race for Homeland Security Committee chair

The House Republican steering committee voted Monday to recommend Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.) for chair of the powerful Homeland Security Committee. Why it matters: Garbarino is set to helm oversight of the Department of Homeland Security, a position that places him at the center of President Trump's immigration policies. The role will formally be decided in a vote of all House Republicans Tuesday morning, but the steering recommendation makes Garbarino likely to prevail. Garbarino will succeed former Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.), who formally resigned from Congress over the weekend. Garbarino beat out Reps. Michael Guest (Miss.), Carlos Gimenez (Fla.) and Clay Higgins (La.) for the post. The intrigue: Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) declined to publicly endorse a candidate before heading into steering.Johnson has four of the 38 votes on the committee.
