Robert Garcia elected Oversight Committee ranking member in win for younger Democrats
House Democrats voted Tuesday to formally elect Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) as ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, sources familiar with the matter told Axios. Why it matters: The 47-year-old Californian's decisive victory is a major coup for the party's youth wing as it tries to secure more leadership roles from the establishment old guard. The victory was considered a forgone conclusion after Garcia unexpectedly won the recommendation of the House Democratic steering committee on the first ballot. With just two terms in Congress under his belt, Garcia will be House Democrats' least-tenured committee leader. What happened: Reps. Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.), 76, and Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), 44, dropped out before the vote. That left Garcia to face Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.), the 70-year-old who took over as acting ranking member following the death of 75-year-old Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.).Zoom out: Garcia pitched colleagues on his experience as the mayor of Long Beach, while also vowing to be a vigorous check on President Trump at the helm of the House's primary investigative body.Lynch and Mfume had hoped their seniority would carry them to victory, while Crockett pitched herself as one of the party's toughest public brawlers."It's clear by the numbers that my style of leadership is not exactly what they were looking for, and so I didn't think it was fair for me to then push forward and try to rebuke that," Crockett told reporters.
