Trans swimmer Lia Thomas' records revoked in UPenn deal with Trump admin

The University of Pennsylvania will retroactively strip transgender swimmer Lia Thomas of her records and titles as part of a deal with the Education Department to abide by bans on transgender athletes in women's sports. Why it matters: Thomas was the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I title in 2022, but the Trump administration threatened to withhold $175 million in federal funds unless the school barred transgender athletes from women's sports."Today is a great victory for women and girls not only at the University of Pennsylvania, but all across our nation," Education Secretary Linda McMahon said in a statement. "The Department commends UPenn for rectifying its past harms against women and girls, and we will continue to fight relentlessly to restore Title IX's proper application and enforce it to the fullest extent of the law."What's next: Penn will give up swimming records, titles or other recognitions awarded to trans athletes and give them to cisgender athletes. Moving forward, the university will not allow trans athletes to compete in correspondence with their gender identity. What they're saying: "Our commitment to ensuring a respectful and welcoming environment for all of our students is unwavering," university president J. Larry Jameson said in a statement."At the same time, we must comply with federal requirements, including executive orders, and NCAA eligibility rules, so our teams and student-athletes may engage in competitive intercollegiate sports."Zoom in: "The University will not—on the basis of sex—exclude female students from participation in, deny female students the benefits of, or subject female students to discrimination under, any athletics programs," a Penn spokesperson said in a statement. "In addition, in providing to female student-athletes intimate facilities such as locker rooms and bathrooms in connection with Penn Athletics, such facilities shall be strictly separated on the basis of sex and comparably provided to each sex."Go deeper: Trump strips Penn's federal funding over transgender athlete policy
