Trump cuts ties with Marjorie Taylor Greene, calling her a "ranting lunatic"

President Trump pulled his support for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Friday, ending a years-long alliance after weeks of Greene publicly breaking with her party.Why it matters: Greene was once considered one of Trump's fiercest allies and a brand ambassador for the MAGA movement. But Trump accused her of veering "too far to the left" and said he'd back a primary challenger "if the right person runs." "I am withdrawing my support and Endorsement of "Congresswoman" Marjorie Taylor Greene," Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post late Friday evening."All I see "Wacky" Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!" Trump wrote. Between the lines: The president claimed that tensions began after he showed Greene polling suggesting she could not win a statewide race, even with his endorsement, which he said he was not going to give. "She has told many people that she is upset that I don't return her phone calls anymore," Trump wrote, "I can't take a ranting Lunatic's call every day."The big picture: Greene has taken positions in recent weeks that have puzzled Republicans, and irritated Trump. She's said her party has "no plan" when it comes to health care. She was one of four Republican to sign a discharge petition to release the Epstein files, against Trump's wishes. In an interview with Axios last month, she slammed Trump's second-term agenda as "America Last."What they're saying: Greene fired back in a post on X, writing that the president "attacked" her, and sharing texts she sent Trump defending her position on the discharge petition. "It's astonishing really how hard he's fighting to stop the Epstein files from coming out that he actually goes to this level," she wrote."I have supported President Trump with too much of my precious time, too much of my own money, and fought harder for him even when almost all other Republicans turned their back and denounced him. But I don't worship or serve Donald Trump."Zoom out: Until now, Greene had avoided any direct criticism of Trump, instead placing blame on his staff or congressional leadership."He really has done a great job in a lot of places. So please do not say, 'Oh, she's criticizing.' I am also praising the president, and I'm really getting tired of headlines saying that I'm not." Greene told Axios in an interview last month. The bottom line: Trump has been privately expressing frustration with Greene for months, and has been asking allies what happened to the congresswoman.The president is currently working to defeat Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie — a Greene ally who is also calling for the release of the Epstein documents.
