Trump orders investigation into Biden

President Trump directed administration officials to investigate former President Biden's use of an autopen to sign documents in an order that raised doubts about his predecessor's mental state. The big picture: The probe into "whether certain individuals conspired to deceive the public about Biden's mental state and unconstitutionally exercise the authorities and responsibilities of the President" comes as House Republicans threaten to subpoena Biden aides for depositions on the former president's mental fitness.Driving the news: Trump directed the counsel to the president, in consultation with Attorney General Pam Bondi and other officials to investigate "whether certain individuals conspired to deceive the public about Biden's mental state and unconstitutionally exercise the authorities and responsibilities of the President," per the order. It alleges that Biden "suffered from serious cognitive decline" for years and that it became "increasingly apparent" in recent months that his "aides abused the power of Presidential signatures through the use of an autopen to conceal Biden's cognitive decline and assert ... authority." Representatives for Biden did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.  Zoom in: Trump officials will also investigate "the circumstances surrounding Biden's supposed execution of numerous executive actions during his final years in office. This would include "the policy documents for which the autopen was used, including clemency grants, Executive Orders, Presidential memoranda, or other Presidential policy decisions," and "who directed that the President's signature be affixed."What we're watching: Per the order, the investigation will address:Any activity, "coordinated or otherwise, to purposefully shield the public from information regarding Biden's mental and physical health."Any "agreements between Biden's aides to cooperatively and falsely deem recorded videos of the President's cognitive inability as fake."Any "agreements between Biden's aides to require false, public statements elevating the President's capabilities," and the purpose of such activities, "including to assert the authorities of the President."Between the lines: The investigation comes at a time when Republicans are eager to deflect attention from issues including anxiety about the economy and middling approval ratings.Trump has denounced as "FAKE" polls showing his approval ratings sinking.Editor's note: This a breaking news story.
