Trump will move U.S. Space Command from Colorado Springs to Alabama
U.S. Space Command is relocating to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, from Colorado, President Trump announced Tuesday. Why it matters: Redstone Arsenal is already home to a significant military presence and is expected to play a "key role" in Trump's desire for a Golden Dome missile defense program. What they're saying: "We're going to be having a Golden Dome, the likes of which nobody has ever seen before," Trump said during Tuesday's Oval Office announcement. The president said that the Golden Dome was needed to "ensure" that America's technological capabilities "remain unmatched long into the future."Follow the money: The relocation of Space Command, one of the Department of Defense's unified combatant commands, from Colorado Springs to Huntsville is expected to bring jobs and investment to the city.North Alabama officials have been hinting at it for months, including Huntsville-area GOP Rep. Dale Strong, who has said that the move could bring about 4,700 jobs to the area."This move will save the taxpayers $480 million," Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) said Tuesday.Context: Tuberville was referring to a transition analysis published by the Government Accountability Office in May that found that moving to Huntsville would cost $426 million less than staying in Colorado over a 15-year period. Catch up quick: Huntsville, home to the 38,000-acre Redstone Arsenal and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, was identified by the Air Force as its preferred location for Space Command in 2021. The Air Force announced Redstone as the preferred location for Space Command headquarters again in 2023 following a yearlong reevaluation of that selection process, per GAO. Space Command officials told GAO they faced personnel, facilities and communications challenges and "stated the Command's posture is not sustainable long term" and would require new construction to support its Colorado operations. The arsenal is also home to the Army Space and Missile Defense Command, Aviation and Missile Command and the Missile and Space Intelligence Center.Flashback: The Biden administration in 2023 overturned plans from the first Trump administration to move the Space Command from Colorado to Alabama.Yes, but: Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said in a statement that his office has been preparing for "such an unlawful decision to move Space Command HQ," and that he's "prepared to challenge it in court."
