Trump's latest name change: Veterans Day to "Victory Day for World War I"

President Trump said late Thursday that he wants to rename Veterans Day as "Victory Day for World War I."Why it matters: Trump has made name changes a recurring theme of his second presidency. He said rebranding the holiday is an effort to boost recognition of American military wins. In addition to changing the name of the Nov. 11 holiday, he also said he'd like to designate May 8, known as Victory in Europe Day, as "Victory in World War II Day." What he's saying: "We won both wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything," Trump wrote late Thursday night on Truth Social. "That's because we don't have leaders anymore that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!"Between the lines: May 8 is not currently a federal holiday, meaning Congress would have to approve any new designation. While fighting in Europe ended in May 1945, WW2 continued in the Pacific until September of that year when Japan formally surrendered. The big picture: Veterans Day is intended to honor veterans of all U.S. wars "for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good," per the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The holiday was originally called Armistice Day for WWI, but that was later expanded. What we're watching: Trump is planning a military parade through Washington, D.C. on June 14, which aligns with the 250th anniversary of the Army's founding and his 79th birthday.
