1 Labour MP Tried To Defend Starmer Amid The Mandelson Saga – But Was Instantly Shredded
John Slinger and Sir Edward LeighJust one Labour MP stood up to defend the government amid the ongoing Peter Mandelson scandal in the Commons today – only to instantly be shouted down.Keir Starmer is in hot water over his former US ambassador Mandelson, who was sacked last week when new evidence revealed he previously called for his friend – convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein – to challenge his prison sentence in 2008.Epstein, who died in 2019, is one of the most prolific child sex offenders in modern history.Mandelson’s friendship with him has raised ongoing questions over why he was ever appointed to such a high-profile role.John Slinger, who was elected to represent Rugby in 2024, was the only Labour MP to put his head above the parapet during an emergency debate over Starmer’s ex-ambassador today. He said: “Under this prime minister, public officials, ministers, and yes, ambassadors, are being held to higher standards than previously. And I welcome that.”His remarks caused laughter throughout the Commons, and father of the House Sir Edward Leigh instantly laid into Slinger. He called the speech “absolutely risible”, adding: “I’ll just give him some advice – don’t do the whips’ dirty work for them.”But Slinger immediately replied: “I would like to give him some advice – please do not patronise me.”“I’m just trying to give him some helpful advice!” Leigh replied.Tory MP Sir Desmond Swayne stood up to add: “Those that lick the feet of the unworthy gain nothing but a dirty tongue.”Just two other Labour MPs spoke up during the lengthy debate: Emily Thornberry, who is also chair of the foreign affairs committee, and Vauxhall MP Florence Eshalomi.Thornberry used her platform to raise further questions about the vetting process around Mandelson, while Eshalomi offered only a neutral speech about remembering Epstein’s victims.Brutal duffing up of the first Labour MP to try defending the government’s attitude to ethics and standards 🐈 pic.twitter.com/0itEN61ycI— Calgie (@christiancalgie) September 16, 2025Related...'A Source Of Deep Shame': Mandelson Blame Game Begins As MPs Rip Into Keir StarmerCabinet Minister Heaps Praise On 'Outstanding' Peter Mandelson Despite Sacking Over Epstein RowPeter Mandelson Has Gone – But Questions About Keir Starmer's Own Future Remain
