9 Boring (But Essential) Winter Buys That'll Make Parents Say 'I Need That!'
Boring buys for parents of kids who get sick in winterWe hope you love the products we recommend! All of them were independently selected by our editors. Just so you know, HuffPost UK may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication.Autumn is here, and I’m less-than-pleased to report I’m enjoying enduring my first cold of the season. My kids, meanwhile, appear to be on their third. As a seasoned parent who’s witnessed their fair share of illnesses over the years, here are some of the boring (but essential) buys I come back to time and time again once the cooler weather hits.1. Snuffle Babe vapour rubThis is a life-saver once little ones catch the many coughs and colds the season has to offer. A little bit of this on their chest helps keep them breathing easy (or at least, a bit easier) throughout the night and during feeds. 2. Aveeno baby moisturiserBetween the low humidity and having the heating on much more, sensitive skin can really suffer in winter. That’s why I’ve always got a bottle of Aveeno nearby – it’s great for moisturising young skin, as well as my dry old hands. 3. Tommee Tippee digital thermometerWith kids catching, on average, five to eight colds a year (although let’s face it, it’s probably more than that), you’ll want a thermometer on hand to be able to tell if they need a bit more help – whether that’s a dose of Calpol or a trip to the GP.4. Frida Baby nasal aspiratorOK, while the premise is gross – you’re essentially sucking mucus out of your baby’s nostrils – I used it weekly in the first few months of both my children’s lives. They can pick up so many viruses when they’re so tiny and their noses are so little that it can be hard for them to breathe. I found using this super satisfying as we’d remove huge balls of snot from their tiny nostrils and they’d breathe easier again. (And the snot can’t reach your mouth, don’t worry!)5. Olbas for childrenI am NEVER without a bottle of this – there’s always a stash in my cupboard because it’s so handy for relieving nasal congestion during coughs and colds season. I either put a few drops in hot water or on a tissue near to their beds to release vapours at night while they sleep. Their coughing always seems to ease up after this.6. Boots nail brushWashing hands regularly is especially important to keep coughs and colds at bay – and so too is cleaning under their nails. This is also a biggie if you want to prevent worms in your household (sorry to mention the ‘W’ word).7. Carex moisture hand gelOut of all the hand gels, this has to be the best for not drying my already-bone-dry hands out. It’s also quick-drying so handy for putting on the kids when you’re out and about and can’t get to a sink. 8. Calpol pain and fever reliefIn every parent’s medicine cupboard, there lurks a bottle of Calpol (equally, in every cutlery drawer there are about 10 of those purple syringes). If you’re running low, now’s the time to buy a bottle ahead of the onslaught of seasonal illnesses. (Always read the label/leaflet before using!)9. Boots six pack of pocket tissuesIf you’re already sick of the sight of snot-stained sleeves, now’s your chance to stock up on some mini packs of tissues in the hopes you can stick them in their school bag and they *might* actually use them. Can’t promise anything, though.Related...My Son Was 1 Day Old When I Learned Our Family Had Been Exposed To Measles.
