Amol Rajan Left Bewildered By Kemi Badenoch's Approach To Leadership In Car Crash Interview
Amol Rajan and Kemi Badenoch on BBC Radio 4's Today programmeAmol Rajan seemed rather stunned by Kemi Badenoch’s approach to leading the Conservative Party in a tense interview this morning. The Tory leader is on the campaign trail ahead of the local elections on May 1, where her party is widely expected to lose hundreds of seats to Reform UK.So the presenter for BBC Radio 4′s Today programme asked how she would assess her performance as Tory leader nearly six months after she took on the job.Badenoch said the biggest difference is the impact she’s had on Tory rows and in-fighting, adding “all of that’s gone” under her leadership.Rajan replied with incredulity: “All of that’s gone?”Badenoch replied: “Well, look at what the papers were saying last year. The divisions on all sorts of policy areas, it doesn’t mean we don’t have disagreements –”“But this time last year, you were in government,” the presenter hit back. “You’re now in opposition. That doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have division.“There are leaks in the papers every single day about disquiet about your leadership.”But the Tory leader hit back: “The idea that we should go on what the papers say about the Conservative Party is absurd.”Referencing a recent poll on on ConservativeHome website which found 55% of Tory members think Badenoch is moving too slowly on developing policies, Rajan said: “I mean there are people who have disquiet about you personally – and your leadership – including on ConservativeHome.“You’ve dismissed that as a minor poll with a small number of members, but your own side in politics are not persuaded by your leadership.”“Amol. That happens to every single leader of every single party, even when they are successful,” she cut in, before claiming that is not the measure of “whether you are doing a good job”.Rajan asked: “What is a measure of whether you are doing a good job?”She just pointed to her previous example of how the newspaper reports have changed.Badenoch added: “It’s not just about winning elections it’s about making sure you can deliver for people – better services, lower taxes – it’s not about fancy announcements, it’s about knowing how you can get them done.”Rajan replied: “You look at all these things as if they’re irrelevant – fancy announcements, it’s not just about winning elections – what a remarkable thing for the leader of the opposition to say! It is about winning elections.” She simply said there were too many people who have won elections without a plan.Related...'That's Hot Air!'
