One Of Donald Trump's Inner Circle Is Now Getting The Liz Truss Lettuce Treatment
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is getting the lettuce treatment. In a proud moment for British culture, US defence secretary Pete Hegseth’s tenure is now being compared to a lettuce’s shelf-life amid reports he is about to lose his job.According to NPR, Donald Trump is looking to replace Hegseth after he shared classified information about the US’s airstrikes on Yemen with his wife, brother and lawyer on Signal.Hegseth was already under pressure over his involvement in a separate Signal group which accidentally included the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. When asked if he still had confidence in his defence secretary, Trump said: “Why would you even ask a question like that?”And when he was asked about the second Signal chat, Hegseth dismissed it as “a bunch of hit pieces”.White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also denied such claims, telling ‘Fox & Friends’ that Hegseth is “doing a phenomenal job leading the Pentagon”.“This is what happens when the entire Pentagon is working against you and working against the monumental change you are trying to implement,” she said. But critics were quick to revive the lettuce stunt first used in 2022 when the Daily Star started a live stream as Liz Truss’ ill-fated premiership neared its end. That followed her disastrous mini-Budget, complete with £45bn of unfunded tax cuts, which sent the pound into decline and the stock market into chaos.Six days after the stunt was set up, Truss gave her resignation speech outside No.10 – meaning the lettuce had outlasted her.The joke was brought back into the spotlight after Republicans Against Trump posted a picture of Hegseth next to a lettuce on X earlier this week, along with the caption: “Here we go.”It quickly secured more than 21,000 likes and almost half a million views. Here we go. pic.twitter.com/MeWadwh9Sz— Republicans against Trump (@RpsAgainstTrump) April 21, 2025Over on BlueSky, the Democrats shared a snapshot of the original Truss livestream, but with Hegseth’s face photoshopped into the frame.Start the clock— Democrats (@democrats.org)2025-04-21T18:04:11.334ZAnd a Democrat US Senate hopeful in South Carolina, Catherine Fleming Bruce, also echoed this sentiment, adding: “Folks from the UK will know exactly what that means.”It might be time to revive the lettuce trope in politics, this time for Hegseth.
