Billie Piper at the premiere of her film Scoop last yearBillie Piper has spoken for the first time about her unexpected appearance in the recent Doctor Who finale.At the end of May, the Bafta nominee surprised many Whovians when she made an unexpected appearance in the season finale’s final moments, which saw Ncuti Gatwa’s Time Lord regenerating into a mysterious character played by Billie.While some took this to mean that the former pop star was the newly-unveiled Sixteenth Doctor, others were less convinced, pointing out that some hallmarks of a new Time Lord being revealed had not been present.During a panel discussion at the Florida Supercon convention over the weekend, Billie was asked about her appearance in the episode and what it meant for her future with the franchise.“This is such a minefield,” Billie admitted, claiming she had to “really engage with” how she responds to questions about Doctor Who.Billie Piper as she appeared in the most recent Doctor Who finaleShe explained: “All I can say is I was approached very last-minute, and I can’t talk about in what capacity, but I found it very emotional to film and I think it’s a really great ending.”“I found it quite moving, and it was really fun to film because it had such a sort of ‘cloak and dagger’ feeling about getting it made,” Billie continued. “So, yeah, I have to lie a lot about anything to do with Doctor Who, it seems.”Billie first made her Doctor Who debut as Rose Tyler two decades ago, appearing as the companion of both Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant’s Doctors.Rose later wound up absorbing the heart of Tardis, becoming a new omniscient entity known as “Bad Wolf”.More recently, Billie briefly returned to Doctor Who as part of its 50th anniversary special, this time playing a different being altogether, known as “The Moment”.
