Black Swan Director Makes Surprising Revelation About The Film's Iconic Final Line
Natalie Portman in Black SwanIt’s approaching 15 years since Black Swan hit cinemas, and in that time many of its iconic sequences have become part of cinema history. But if there’s one section of the movie that most stands out in our memories, it’s those final moments, where Natalie Portman’s character triumphantly completes her choreography (despite having been fatally injured backstage moments later) before making her final declaration of: “I felt it. Perfect. It was perfect.”During a wide-ranging interview with Vogue to commemorate the film’s upcoming anniversary, director Darren Aronofsky made a surprising admission about this line’s origins.“It was clear early on that I was working with Natalie,” he explained. “The script was constantly evolving and Natalie was a big part of that. She even wrote the last line in the movie.”Over the course of the interview, Darren, Natalie and her co-star Mila Kunis shared some of their core memories of making the film, including one story from the Oscar winner about a scrapped plan to incorporate her voice into its score.“You had this idea where the score would be me creepily humming the Swan Lake music over a piano,” Natalie told her former director. “You didn’t end up using it but I saw a lot of the movie because we just went through it while you recorded me humming.”“I mean, it obviously didn’t work,” she added.Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Darren Aronofsky and Winona Ryder at the premiere of Black Swan in 2010Natalie and Mila also spoke about Darren’s thwarted attempts to pit them against one another behind the scenes to try and drum up more tension between their characters.“Mila and Natalie both realised very quickly what I was doing and made fun of me, so it quickly became a joke that we all understood,” Darren admitted. The Family Guy star then added: “Darren would tell me, ’Nat is working really, really hard. She’s not even taking Saturdays and Sundays off’. Then I would text Nat and she’d be like, ‘…No, I’m not?’.“I think that’s how we figured out what Darren was up to, but it was all in good fun.”After its US release towards the end of 2010, Black Swan went on to snag five nominations at the Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, while Natalie picked up Best Actress.Mila was also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category at that year’s Golden Globes.Read the full piece in Vogue here.MORE FILM NEWS:Thought The Stars Of Weapons Looked Familiar?
