(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)Keir Starmer has split with Donald Trump by insisting that Ukraine must be allowed to join Nato if it wants to.The prime minister’s official spokesman said on Monday that Kyiv is on an “irreversible path” to membership of the military alliance. That put him at odds with the US president, who insisted that Ukraine should be blocked from joining Nato as part of any peace deal to end the war in the country.Posting on his Truth Social site on Sunday, Trump said: “President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE.”Trump’s remarks came in the wake of his summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska last Friday, which broke up with no progress made in ending the war.Russia is vehemently opposed to Ukraine’s aim of becoming a Nato member.Asked about the president’s comments, the PM’s spokesman said the government’s support for Ukrainian Nato membership “has not changed”.He said: “Ukraine is on an irreversible path. Russia cannot have a veto on Ukraine’s pathway to Nato. “Our focus is on a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and we welcome President Trump’s efforts to secure that.”The comments came as Starmer prepares to join other European leaders in Washington, where Trump will hold talks with Zelenskyy on Monday evening. The last time the pair met in the Oval Office six months ago, the Ukrainian president was ambushed by both Trump and his deputy, JD Vance. At the Alaska summit, Putin told Trump that he wants Ukraine to give up the Donbas region as the price of any peace deal.Trump said after the summit that he and Putin “has largely agreed” on land transfers and security guarantees for Ukraine. But Starmer’s spokesman said: “It’s only up to Ukraine to determine its own territories and borders and we will always stand by Ukraine.”Related...Trump Piles Pressure On Zelenskyy To End The War Putin Started In Bizarre Truth Social RantTrump Writes Post About Moscow That's Absurd Even For HimVolodymyr Zelenskyy Delivers Blunt Message To Donald Trump After His Ukraine War U-Turn
