Bob Vylan Speak Out After Glastonbury Set Sparks Criminal Investigation

Bobby Vylan of Bob Vylan performing at Glastonbury on SaturdayThe members of the punk rap duo Bob Vylan have spoken out after it was confirmed that the band’s set at Glastonbury had sparked a criminal investigation. On Saturday afternoon, the performers – who use the stage names Bobby and Bobbie Vylan – made headlines when the group’s frontman spoke out in solidarity with Palestine amid the current conflict in the Middle East, first leading the crowd in a chant of “free Palestine”, before introducing a second chant of “death to the IDF”, referring to Israel’s army. These remarks were quickly condemned by the BBC – which broadcast the set live on iPlayer, and later accused the frontman of antisemitism – as well as Glastonbury’s organisers and UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer.Following the news that both Bob Vylan and Kneecap’s sets had led to a criminal investigation from police, the band shared a fresh statement on Instagram on Tuesday afternoon.“Today, a good many people would have you believe a punk band is the number one threat to world peace,” they began. “Last week, it was a Palestine pressure group, the week before that, it was another band [referring to Palestine Action and Kneecap, respectively].“We are not for the death of Jews, Arabs or any other race or group of people. We are for the dismantling of a violent military machine. A machine whose own soldiers were told to use ‘unnecessary lethal force’ against innocent civilians waiting for aid. A machine that has destroyed much of Gaza.”The musicians continued: “We, like those in the spotlight before us, are not the story.“We are a distraction from the story. And whatever sanctions we receive will be a distraction. The government doesn’t want us to ask why they remain silent in the face of this atrocity. To ask why they aren’t doing more to stop the killing. To feed the starving.“The more they talk about Bob Vylan, the less they spend answering for their criminal inaction. We are being targeted for speaking up. We are not the first. We will not be the last. And if you care for the sanctity of human life and freedom of speech, we urge you to speak up, too.”View this post on InstagramA post shared by Bob Vylan (@bobbyvylan)The two members of Bob Vylan have also had their US work visas revoked, as well as reportedly being dropped by their agents at UTA (United Talent Agency).Avon and Somerset Police said on Monday afternoon: “Video footage and audio from Bob Vylan and Kneecap’s performances at Glastonbury Festival on Saturday has been reviewed. Following the completion of that assessment process we have decided further enquiries are required and a criminal investigation is now being undertaken. A senior detective has been appointed to lead this investigation.”“We have received a large amount of contact in relation to these events from people across the world and recognise the strength of public feeling,” their statement continued. “There is absolutely no place in society for hate.“Neighbourhood policing teams are speaking with people in their local communities and key stakeholders to make sure anyone who needs us knows that we are here for them. We hope the work we have carried out, and are continuing to carry out, reassures the public how seriously we are treating Saturday’s events.”READ MORE:BBC Issues Fresh Statement In Response To Backlash Over Bob Vylan Glastonbury BroadcastPolice Open Criminal Investigation After Bob Vylan And Kneecap's Glastonbury SetsKeir Starmer Demands BBC Explain How Bob Vylan 'Hate Speech' Was Broadcast
