British Voters Have Delivered A Damning Verdict On Donald Trump's Ability To End Ukraine War

President Donald Trump, left, greets Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as he arrives at the White House, Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, in Washington. British voters have delivered a damning verdict on Donald Trump’s ability to broker an end to the war in Ukraine.New polling shows the public’s trust in the US president has plummeted in the wake of his summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska last Friday.Although Trump claimed the talks had been a great success, the Russian president was widely acknowledged to have emerged from it in a stronger position.Despite literally rolling out the red carpet as Putin arrived on US soil, Trump received no assurances that Russia wants to end its illegal invasion of Ukraine.According to research by the More in Common think-tank, a staggering 82% of Brits now have little or no trust in Trump’s ability to secure a peace deal. That is a rise of eight points since before the US president sat down with his Russian counterpart.More than twice as many British voters believe Putin got the upper hand in his talks with Trump (32%) than think the American leader came out on top (14%).And only a quarter think Trump is helping the peace process, compared to 30% who think he is making it harder.Luke Tryl, More in Common’s executive director, said: “We knew ahead of the summit that the British public were not expecting a miracle from President Trump’s talks with Putin.“It seems that watching the president roll out the red carpet has done little to boost these hopes: only days after the summit, our polling shows that Britons’ trust has been further eroded - and many believe that Putin got the upper hand over the US president.”The poll also made grim reading for Keir Starmer, who broke off from his summer holiday to fly to Washington for talks with Trump, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders.Nearly half the public (47%) believe he is making no difference to the peace process, with only 22% believing he is helping. And despite Trump’s insistence that Putin does want to end the war, 67% of British voters say the Russian leader is making the quest for peace harder.Related...'The Opposite Of Peace': Putin Launches Air Strikes On Ukraine During Trump-Zelenskyy TalksTrump And Zelenskyy Avoid Repeat Of Oval Office Disaster – But Peace Still A Long Way OffKeir Starmer Splits With Donald Trump On Whether Ukraine Should Be Allowed To Join Nato
