Cynthia Nixon Reacts To Claims That Miranda Has Changed Too Much In And Just Like That
Cynthia Nixon in season three of And Just Like ThatSex And The City star Cynthia Nixon is not here for certain criticisms that have been levelled at her character since the reboot And Just Like That began airing.Compared to other characters from the show, it’s fair to say that Miranda Hobbes has been on the biggest journey. In the Sex And The City finale, she was seen embarking on a new life with her husband, Steve, and their two-year-old son, Brady, while working as a partner at a law firm.Almost two decades later, the reboot And Just Like That introduced Miranda at a different stage in her life, carrying on an affair with non-binary comedian Che Diaz (played by Sara Ramírez) and having abandoned corporate law to study for a Master’s degree in human rights. But these weren’t the only changes that people spotted in Miranda’s character – with some Sex And The City devotees claiming that her personality had changed, too, most notably in her awkward interactions while at school and her extra-marital affair behind her husband’s back.Sara Ramírez and Cynthia Nixon in And Just Like That season oneSpeaking to HuffPost UK ahead of the premiere of And Just Like That’s third season, though, Cynthia insisted: “I don’t think she’s changed at all!”“I think she is a person who was always super opinionated, super intense, and was a bit of a bull in a china shop, and was sort of charging in one direction, and would sometimes have to backtrack a little bit or apologise that she sort of went too far too fast,” she said.“And I think that that’s what we’ve seen in terms of her tempestuous love affair with Che. I think, in a way, Miranda being so sure of herself is a kind of a thing that got her dug into a hole and painted her into a corner that in the beginning of the series she had to find a way out [of]. It’s hard to break out of a box that you’ve been living in for so long.”The Emmy winner added: “I loved all of the amazing, surprising, dramatic things I got to play [as Miranda]. As a viewer, I don’t want to watch a show about characters that have figured everything out and are well-behaved and have a challenge like, ‘where am I going to buy chicken for dinner?’.“I think we want to take these really fascinating, strong, smart characters, and throw them into hot water. So I love that – I love that about her, and I love that, in the same way, if we think back to Carrie, you know, cheating on [Aidan] with [Big], or Carrie and her smoking, or Carrie and her spending habits. You know, [Sex And The City] wasn’t about showing women who were like girl scouts and getting an A in conduct – far from it.”Cynthia Nixon at the premiere of And Just Like That last monthBack in 2022, Cynthia admitted she’d found some of the fan reactions to Miranda’s And Just Like That storylines “bizarre”.She claimed at the time: “I think Miranda is brave, and I think Miranda is charging forward. She doesn’t know where she’s going exactly, but she knows she has to go somewhere. And I think that’s always been true of Miranda, right?“Miranda’s very smart, and she’s very tenacious, but the idea that she’s levelheaded — she’s never been levelheaded! She’s a loose cannon, a very opinionated loose cannon.”Read more from our interviews with And Just Like That stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Nicole Ari Parker here.MORE AND JUST LIKE THAT:'We've Got A Nice Groove': The And Just Like That Cast Look Ahead At What's To Come In Season 3'It's Interesting How We Judge Women': Sarah Jessica Parker Fires Back At Carrie Bradshaw HatersKristin Davis Admits 1 Thing She's 'So Scared' Of Before Every Season Of And Just Like That'I Always Hated That': Cynthia Nixon Says This Part Of Sex And The City Has 'Really Not Aged Well'
