Destination X Reviews: Critics Compare New Show To The Traitors And Race Across The World
Rob Brydon in a promo image for Destination XIf you’re yet to find another show that can emulate the thrill of watching The Traitors or the adventure of Race Across The World, one new reality series might just have you covered on both fronts.Destination X is the BBC’s new competition series fronted by Rob Brydon, which brings a group of sensory-deprived contestants to mystery locations across Europe before they have to ask themselves a simple question: “Where in the world am I?”The first episode sees 13 recruits whisked away on a helicopter with vision-obscuring goggles, before they board a bus with blacked out windows. Each episode going forward will feature another leg of their mystery journey with plenty of clues, twists and turns along the way, all with the goal of winning a £100,000 prize fund. The concept was first introduced on a Belgian version of the show, followed by a US adaptation which is presented by The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Critics are already hailing this BBC show as a promising watch since the first episode premiered on Wednesday, and while admittedly not everyone is sold on the concept just yet, it’s pretty clear Destination X promises fun mid-week viewing, with viewers even able to play from home. Here’s the consensus so far…The Guardian (3/5)“The BBC’s big new reality competition will make you feel like you’re hallucinating… it’s like The Traitors meets Race Across the World, with contestants sent on a deliberately disorientating 175-mile helicopter ride – and then put onto a bus with no windows. And that’s before you consider the challenges…”The Independent (4/5)“Fronted by a charming Rob Brydon and incorporating a play-at-home element, this winning combination of The Traitors meets Race Across The World is ideal mid-week viewing.”Rob Brydon speaks to the cast of Destination XThe Standard (3/5)“Rob Brydon show offers fresh thinking, but can’t beat Race Across The World… Destination X is fresh enough conceptually to entertain, and offers something new in the reality TV stakes, which is an increasingly hard challenge to succeed at.”Metro (3/5)“The further down the road we go, the more promise the format shows. Tears are shed, stakes rise, the twists are meaty, there’s a rug pull that’s genuinely quite shocking, and by episode three, my interest had definitely piqued.”The Mirror“If you can keep up with the show’s silly clues and subtle hints, then Destination X is a compelling and entertaining watch that will give you a mid-week lift over the next two months. If not, hopefully you’ll get some holiday inspiration – well, when the destinations are finally revealed.”Rob Brydon is the host of Destination X, which has already been compared to The Traitors and Race Across The WorldThe Telegraph (2/5)“The most exciting moment of Destination X is when someone breaks a fingernail… Despite an eye-watering budget, the BBC’s new reality game show is on a road to nowhere.”The Times (2/5)″[Destination X is] a convoluted mess. One contestant even quit before the first episode ended… The show lacked momentum, with the events feeling a bit random. I ended up not caring ‘where the X’ they were or who got sent home.”The first episode of Destination X is available to watch on BBC iPlayer now, with new episodes airing weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays.MORE TV NEWS:Alison Hammond Just Dug Out Her Big Brother Audition Tape And We Can't Stop WatchingI Kissed A Boy's First Trans Contestant Lars Fellows Says Casting 'Backlash' Is 'Rooted In Fear And Misinformation'The Full Celebrity Traitors Line-Up Has Finally Been Confirmed And All We Can Say Is Wow
