Donald Trump Gives Nonsensical Answer When Asked About Seeking Third Term
Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gestures as he speaks during a campaign rally at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 5, 2024.US President Donald Trump continues to remain vague on rumours he’ll seek a third term, even after his team has begun selling merchandise implying otherwise.Speaking to The Atlantic in an interview published on Monday, Trump acknowledged that the prospect of him seeking the presidency in 2028 would be challenging, but stopped short of ruling out the idea completely despite it being unconstitutional. “That would be a big shattering, wouldn’t it?” he told the outlet, laughing. “Well, maybe I’m just trying to shatter.”After noting some of his supporters have urged him to run for a third term during his public appearances, he added: “It’s not something that I’m looking to do. And I think it would be a very hard thing to do.” The president’s comments come just days after “Trump 2028” hats and T-shirts appeared for sale on the Trump Organization’s website. “The future looks bright!” the description on both items reads, before urging prospective buyers to “rewrite the rules.”Red hats featuring the slogan “Trump 2028” appeared for sale on the Trump Organization’s website in early April. When asked by Axios about the items last week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said a third term was “not something [Trump is] thinking of,” before noting: “Though I hear the hats are flying off shelves.” The Constitution currently bars a person from being elected to the presidency more than twice, as specified in the 22nd Amendment. Any change would require a two-thirds approval from both the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as approval from three-quarters of the country’s state-level governments.Since being sworn into office for a second term in January, Trump has repeatedly declined to rule out the prospect of running again.“There are methods which you could do it,” he told NBC News last month, while reiterating his continuous, albeit legally debunked, claims that he won the 2020 election over former US President Joe Biden. Of course, the president has other reasons to keep the public discourse focused on the question of whether he’ll run for office again, no matter how far-reaching it may be. Over the past several days, numerous polls have found Trump’s approval ratings at historic lows for any president in their first 100 days, when all of his predecessors have continued to enjoy a groundswell of support. Among the most damning was The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos’ poll, which found that just 39% of adult Americans approve of the way Trump is handling his job. Related...Trump Pulls Obnoxious Stunt As Canada Elects Its Prime MinisterDowning Street Has Contradicted Donald Trump's Latest Comments On The Ukraine WarTrump Boldly Claims Steep Tariffs Could Lead To Taxes Being ‘Completely Eliminated’ For Some Workers
