Ex-Tory MP Defects To Reform Despite Urging Everyone Not To Vote Reform A Year Ago
Adam Holloway, former Tory MP who has now defected to ReformAn ex-Tory MP, who was kicked out by voters at the last general election, has just defected to Reform UK.As reported by the Spectator, Adam Holloway announced on Wednesday that, after spending almost 20 years as the Conservative MP for Gravesham, he was now going to be joining Nigel Farage’s right-wing party. There’s only one problem: just a year ago, he urged voters not to back Reform. He previously posted on social media that a “vote for Reform is a vote for Labour” but has since said that he “no longer believed” that statement.Holloway lost his seat in July 2024 to Labour’s Lauren Sullivan, who overturned his majority of 15,000.However, the former MP told the BBC this defection was not motivated by the hope that he could be re-elected, claiming he is not a “careerist” – although the opportunity to return to Westminster was “on his mind”.But, he insisted, “I have joined Reform because I think this is the best chance to recover the country from Labour,” claiming the Tories do not provide “an effective opposition right now”.He said: “The issue is the country has serious social and economic problems, and potentially an economic disaster in the next couple of years during a time of great global insecurity.”He claimed Reform was not perfect but it was the “only party to see and feel the extent of the country’s problems”.Holloway follows the lead of other former Tories who were ousted by voters last July like ex-party chairperson Jake Berry, former Wales secretary David Jones and Andrea Jenkyns, who became the Greater Lincolnshire mayor in May.Holloway was known to be a keen advocate for Brexit and worked as a party whip under Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. He was one of the six Tory MPs who voted against censuring Johnson for misleading the Commons over the Partygate scandal, too.He caused a stir when he told BBC Newsnight they were making Johnson “look like Hannibal Lecter” amid the whole crisis.Holloway made further headlines in 2023 when he warned the Tories were going down a “totalitarian, woke” route by kicking fellow Tory MP Andrew Bridgen out of the party for spreading Covid misinformation.Related...Blow To Labour As Reform Voters Prefer Jeremy Corbyn To Keir Starmer On Almost Every MetricIs It Accurate To Say Corbyn's Group Is Now The Biggest Political Party In The UK?Nick Ferrari Calls Out Reform UK MP For Presenting A Belief As A Fact In On-Air Clash
