Former Russian Prime Minister Neatly Sums Up How Keen Putin Is For Peace In Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin attends a meeting with acting governor of the Rostov region Yuri Slyusar at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, Monday, Aug. 18, 2025. A former Russian prime minister has insisted Vladimir Putin is “absolutely not” interested in ending the war in Ukraine.Mikhail Kasyanov’s comments are a rebuke for Donald Trump, who was caught on a hot mic telling Emmanuel Macron that the Russian president “wants to make a deal for me”.Since Putin’s “Pursuing Peace” summit with Trump in Alaska last Friday, however, Russia has continued to bombard Ukraine with drone attacks and missiles, killing at least 10 civilians including an 18-month-old girl.On Times Radio this morning, Kasyanov – who was Russian PM from 2000 until 2004 – was asked how serious Putin was about agreeing a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine and said: “Absolutely not.”He also said Putin had no interest in sitting down for one-to-one talks with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as has been suggested by Trump.“He doesn’t want to have the high-level meeting,” Kusyanov said. “He doesn’t want to meet to sit down with Zelenskyy.“It will be some of a humiliating event for him. That’s why he will be avoiding it. You’re correct that the ball is on Putin’s court, but he will continue dragging out time, continue his offensive operation, believing that he will win the war of attrition.”Trump has faced intense criticism for failing to win any concessions from Putin during their talks in Alaska.Instead, he has since repeated Kremlin talking points such as the need for Ukraine to give up land in exchange for peace, and even suggesting that Kyiv was responsible for the war. However, Trump did acknowledge that Putin “doesn’t want to make a deal” during an interview with Fox and Friends on Tuesday.Related...The Penny Finally Drops For Trump As He Admits Putin 'May Not Want A Peace Deal'Radio Host Torches Trump For Letting Putin Walk Away Without Ceasefire Agreement'The Opposite Of Peace': Putin Launches Air Strikes On Ukraine During Trump-Zelenskyy Talks
