Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood Says Synagogue Attack Shows There Is A 'Problem' With Integration
Britain's Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, speaks during the annual Labour Party conference in Liverpool, England, Monday, Sept. 29, 2025. Shabana Mahmood has said that the terror attack on a Manchester synagogue proves there is a “problem” with integration in the UK.Speaking after two people were killed and three others seriously injured on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur, the home secretary said she is “very worried about the state of community relations in our country”.Sky News presenter Trevor Phillips asked the cabinet minister on Sunday morning: “Have we failed on integration?”She replied: “I think there is a question for us to ask ourselves on integration.“You’re right Trevor, as somebody who has grown up with all the advantages of this society, all of the freedoms, all of the rights but all of the responsibilities that go alongside that.“Why do people do these acts? It does feel inexplicable, but it is the job of a government, particularly one that cares about bringing our country together. and making sure all of our citizens are integrated and feel safe.“It’s our job to think long and hard about why that is happening.”She noted that the police investigation into the synagogue atrocity is ongoing and that the motives of the attacker, Jihad Al-Shamie, need to be fully uncovered.Mahmood said that once the investigation is concluded, the government will be able to draw wider lessons from what is going on in the country.“You can rest assured for your viewers that I do recognise there is a problem here, and one for us as a government to think about deeply,” she said. The cabinet minister also told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg: “I am very worried about the state of community relations in our country.”Asked about the long-running safety concerns felt in the Jewish community, Mahmood said: “I recognise the sense of people feeling let down, I do recognise that people have been saying for a while that this was only a matter of time.“It is devastating hearing our citizens say that. I will ensure the government response to what has happened meets the scale of the challenge.”Her remarks go further than previous comments from fellow cabinet ministers, who have all made it clear that improving integration is a key part of their plan for government.Former deputy prime minister and communities secretary Angela Rayner claimed in July that a variety of factors were to blame for straining “social fabric, trust and integration” in communities around the UK, including immigration. And when announcing a crackdown on immigration in the summer, PM Keir Starmer said: “When people come to our country, they should also commit to integration, to learning our language, and our system should actively distinguish between those that do and those that don’t. I think that’s fair.”Related...Synagogue Attack: Shabana Mahmood Urges Pro-Palestine Protesters Not To March This Weekend
