Homelessness Minister Said To Have Kicked Out Her Own Tenants, Then Hiked Up The Rent
Rushanara Ali is the homelessness minister. The homelessness minister decided to kick out her own tenants and then hike the rent up last year, according to reports. The i newspaper has reported that Rushanara Ali told the four tenants who lived in her east London house that they would not have their lease renewed last November, giving them four months’ notice to leave. The property was then re-listed with an extra £700 added to the rent – meaning it cost £4,000 per month. The Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow was renting her house out on a fixed-term contract and tried to put it up for sale while the tenants were still living there. She then reportedly had to re-list it as a rental because it was not sold.A source close to Ali told the newspaper that the tenants had been told they could stay on a rolling basis while the property was on the market but they had decided to move on.Her spokesperson told the i newspaper: “Rushanara takes her responsibilities seriously and complied with all relevant legal requirements.”The timing of this report adds to the terrible optics of this revelation, considering the government is currently trying to clamp down on what it describes as unfair rental practices. With the renters’ rights bill, Labour are hoping to ban landlords from ending tenancies to sell a property from re-listing it as a rental for at least six months. The government also want to scrap fixed-term tenancies and make sure landlords offer four months’ notice to the occupants if the property going on the market. The director at the Renters’ Reform Coalition, Tom Darling, said the report was “mind-boggling” and called on Ali to “recuse herself from any discussions” about the ban on re-letting after evictions. The chief executive of Generation Rent, Ben Twomey, said the allegations against Ali were “shocking and a wake-up call to government on the need to push ahead as quickly as possible to improve protections for renters”.He added: “It is bad enough when any landlord turfs out their tenant to hike up the rent, or tries their luck with unfair claims on the deposit, but the minister responsible for homelessness knows only too well about the harm caused by this behaviour.“These allegations highlight common practices that the government can eradicate.”Shadow housing secretary James Cleverly told the i newspaper Ali should re-consider her position within the government because the allegations would be “an example of the most extreme hypocrisy”.Tory Party chair Kevin Hollinrake accused Ali of “staggering hypocrisy”, adding: “She’s spoken out about exploiting tenants, about providing more protections to tenants. You can’t say those things, then do the opposite in practice, as a landlord. She’s got to resign.”SNP’s deputy leader at Westminster, Pete Wishart, said: “Once this shameful story broke, Labour’s homelessness minister should have immediately resigned.”Labour’s home secretary Yvette Cooper said: “I don’t know any of the the details of this but I understand she has followed all the rules in this case.”Related...Is Labour Preparing Brits For A Tax Shock This Autumn?'None Of This Needed To Happen': How Corbyn's Party Is Causing Hand-Wringing Among The Labour LeftLabour Can't Decide What It's Doing With The Internet
