Elf On The Shelf has become a household name in the UK over the years – to the point where there’s no escaping it come 1st December (there’s even an Elf’s Story movie and Tonie character.)While the tradition is a bit like Marmite for parents, if your child loves those playful characters and the story behind it, they’re going to want to hear about the latest launch coming this October. In celebration of the character’s 20th anniversary (yup, where did that time go?!), a video game will be released where kids can become a Scout Elf-in-training.And they’re probably going to be a wee bit obsessed.Wait, what is Elf on the Shelf?For the uninitiated, an elf toy *hides* in different locations around the house each day from December 1 through to Christmas Eve. Kids then take great joy in tracking the elf down.Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell came up with the storybook in 2004. “We grew up with this tradition in our home,” Bell previously told HuffPost UK. “When we were children, our Scout Elf, Fisbee, would come to our home and look over our family each year. I have such wonderful childhood memories with Fisbee.”After it was rejected by publishers, the pair decided to self-publish the book in 2005 and packaged it up with an elf toy – and a major movement was born. An Elf On The Shelf game is coming to a console near you.What’s the video game about?The video game – called The Elf on the Shelf: Christmas Heroes – launches on 17 October.Kids aged five and up can play the game on consoles (we’re talking Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S) or their PC.Described as a “joyful 2D puzzle-platforming adventure packed with cheer, mischief and merriment”, players will be able to “experience the North Pole like never before”.Kids step into the role of a Scout Elf-in-training on a merry quest to gather Christmas Spirit and help save the holiday season. From Scout Elf Bootcamp to Santa’s Workshop, there are 24 levels full of interactive fun.Stephanie Malham, managing director of Outright Games, said: “Our goal was to make a game that feels like opening the door to Santa’s workshop. The world of The Elf on the Shelf is so rich with charm and curiosity, we wanted to pack every level with that same playful energy.“It’s a game full of heart, humour, and holiday magic, where kids and their families can feel like true Christmas heroes.”As a fan of all things Christmas (I recently stayed in a hotel’s Christmas room during a summer scorcher) all I can say is: sign me up.
