'I'm Gonna Destroy Your F**king Life': Winona Ryder Gets Candid About Director's Shocking Abuse

Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder at last year's Venice Film FestivalWinona Ryder has claimed that it was only through speaking to her Beetlejuice co-star Jenna Ortega that she realised the severity of one former director’s abusive treatment of her on set.The Stranger Things actor recently sat down for an interview with Elle UK, in which he reflected on some of the more difficult situations she has found herself in over the course of her acting career.During the interview, Winona recalled speaking to the producers of one unnamed film about the “inappropriate” way its director was behaving towards her, and asking if they could speak to him about his conduct.“The next day I had a big scene,” she explained, noting that the filmmaker in question approached her and said: “So, um, if we just try it like…”At that point, he then switched his voice to a “whisper”, telling her: “You fucking cunt, I’m gonna destroy your fucking life.”Returning to full volume, he then continued; “OK? So let’s just do it like that?”“And I had to fucking act,” Winona then said. “And what’s so crazy is my brother was working as a PA on the movie, and I didn’t even tell him, and I didn’t complain.”Winona Ryder in 2022The Oscar nominee noted that she brought out this anecdote, “almost telling it like it was this funny story”, while on the set of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice with Michael Keaton and her on-screen daughter, Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega.“I’m looking at Jenna’s face and imagining it happening to her.
