In Flight Reviews: What Are Critics Saying About The Slow Horses Director's New Show?
Katherine Kelly plays Jo in the new Channel 4 drama In FlightFans of Slow Horses may well want to check out Channel 4’s latest dramatic offering.Slow Horses director Adam Randall – who helmed the hit spy series’ fourth season – has co-created a new drama for Channel 4, titled In Flight, which began airing on Tuesday night, and continues on Wednesday and Thursday. The drama centres around a young man who is accused of murder while on holiday in Bulgaria, leading to his air hostess mum (played by Katherine Kelly, best known for her work in Happy Valley, Mr Selfridge, Gentlemen Jack, Criminal: UK and, of course, Coronation Street) to turn to drug trafficking in an attempt to spare him from prison.Given Slow Horses’ enduring popularity, you might be curious about how this latest drama fares – and so far, it’s had pretty good reviews, although some critics have suggested it may be a little on the bleak side for some viewers’ tastes. Here’s a selection of what’s been said about In Flight so far…Digital Spy“Kelly’s approach to Jo isn’t phoned in. There is real grit and desperation to the way she claws herself through every obstacle, as the drama unfolds.“Even so, the whole show isn’t riding on her talent alone. The writing [is] as impressively tight as Jo’s expression the whole way through. There is beat by beat tension that causes you to lean dangerously close to the screen, in anticipation of what will happen next.”The Times (4/5) “The impressive Kelly was carrying the whole thing pretty much from the first scene, her pinched features stifling screams of desperation from under her heavy fringe.” In Flight is a new drama from the director of Slow Horses season 4The Guardian (3/5) “Oh god, the suffering. The bleak, bleak suffering. Katherine Kelly’s desperate drug-smuggling thriller – featuring distressing scenes set in a Bulgarian prison – is so claustrophobic it’s suffocating.”The Standard (3/5) “[Some elements] mainly the plot, don’t stand up [...] to be honest, this isn’t the kind of show to think too hard about. It rattles along pleasingly enough, and Kelly is magnetic in the lead role, which just about keeps things on the rails. The plot doesn’t make sense, but as lazy Tuesday night viewing, it fits the bill.”Daily Mail (3/5)“For the first half-hour, Katherine Kelly battled to maintain the pace, but like a runner who starts a marathon with a sprint, she inevitably began to flag. Twice, she flopped down onto a mattress and appeared to pass out from sheer exhaustion. I don’t blame her.”The Telegraph (4/5) “Channel 4 doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to drama, but this one is a cut above their usual fare and could sit just as happily on ITV primetime or Netflix. Although Netflix would definitely have thrown some more money at it – the production values are a bit cheap and dreary. For a series set in various international locations, you never get the sense that it’s being filmed anywhere other than a cold European country. Kelly is great in the lead role, playing an ordinary person caught in an extraordinary situation.”View this post on InstagramA post shared by Channel 4 (@channel4)Radio Times“Kelly should be praised for the outstanding work she does here, and there are no doubt elements to enjoy. But it does feel as though In Flight has fallen into the trap of thinking that dark, authentic and tense has to mean miserable.”Esquire“Prepare for another travel-based anxiety attack [...] it’s a high-stakes thriller that overcomes its somewhat preposterous set-up to keep you gripped to the final episode.”In Flight continues on Wednesday and Thursday at 9pm on Channel 4.READ MORE:We Want To Knight Gary Oldman All Over Again After These Exciting Slow Horses UpdatesOne Piece Fans Just Got 2 Exciting Updates About The Future Of The ShowBinged Wednesday Already?
