'It's Modern Day Appeasement': Joe Biden Slams Donald Trump Over Ukraine War

Joe Biden has broken with convention by criticising Donald Trump.Joe Biden has accused Donald Trump of “modern day appeasement” over his attempts to end the Ukraine war.The US president has said Kyiv will have to concede land to Russia as part of any peace deal.But Biden, who defeated Trump in the 2020 US election but pulled out of last year’s White House race, condemned his successor in the Oval Office.He told the BBC’s Nick Robinson: “It is modern-day appeasement. Look, listen to what Putin said when he talked about going from Kyiv into Ukraine, and why. He believes it is part of mother Russia, he believes in historical rights to Ukraine. “What this man wants to do is re-establish the Warsaw Pact. He can’t stand the fact that the Russian dictatorship he runs, that the Soviet Union has collapsed. And anybody who thinks he’s going to stop is just foolish.”He added: “I just don’t understand how people think that if we allow a dictator, a thug, to decide he’s going to take significant portions of land that aren’t his, that that’s going to satisfy him. I don’t quite understand.”Asked about Trump’s astonishing Oval Office bust-up with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Biden said it was “beneath America” and then went on to attack the US president’s other foreign policy pronouncements.He said: “The way we talk about now the ‘Gulf of America’, maybe we’re going to have to take back Panama, maybe we need to acquire Greenland, maybe Canada. What the hell’s going on? What president ever talks like that?“That’s not who we are. We’re about freedom, democracy, opportunity, not about confiscation.”Biden also took aim at Trump over his criticism of Nato.Asked if his administration has a point when they accuse other Nato countries of not contributing enough to the alliance, Biden said: “No, they don’t have a point. When we were attacked, what happened on 9/11? They all responded.“Imagine there being no Nato. Do you think Putin would have stopped at Ukraine? I don’t understand how they fail to understand that there’s strength in alliances.
