Jonathan Reynolds Confirms UK Was Not Involved In Trump's Strikes On Iran
Business and trade secretary Jonathan ReynoldsThe UK was not involved in Donald Trump’s overnight strikes on Iran – but it did know in advance, according to a cabinet minister. The US struck three Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities over the weekend, despite previous pleas from the UK for de-escalation in the region. It comes after Israel initiated a week of fire exchange with Iran, over fears that Tehran was developing nuclear warheads – a claim Iran has long denied.Business and trade secretary Jonathan Reynolds told Sky News: “We are not and have not been involved in these attacks.“We did know, I can’t tell you when, but we were informed by a key ally, as you might expect, of this action.”There have been fears that the US would need to use its shared military base with the UK in the Chagos Islands to attack Iran – which could drag Britain into the war, too.But Reynolds said “no request was made” by the American forces to use British facilities , adding: “The US has used other means to carry out this mission.”Asked if the UK would help if asked, he said it was “difficult to comment on hypotheticals”, but said they have moved British assets to the region.“We will take all actions necessary to defend our own interests, our own people, and that of our key allies if they are under threat,” Reynolds said.He said that support would not necessarily come in a military sense, but noted there were NATO asset forces across the Middle East.“It’s too hypothetical a question to speculate,” Reynolds said. “The US wants to see people around the negotiating table.”Reynolds also refused to say if the UK had received any legal advice from its attorney general on joining such a war.Reynolds also emphasised that Iran is a problem for Britain, noting that said an Iranian nuclear weapon would be “a direct threat to the United Kingdom and life in the United Kingdom”.But he added: “The best course of action is that this conflict stops and  a negotiated diplomatic solution is obtained.”Keir Starmer is “talking to key allies” today, according to the cabinet minister.Reynolds’ comments come after Starmer wrote on X this morning: “Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security. Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US has taken action to alleviate that threat.“The situation in the Middle East remains volatile and stability in the region is a priority. We call on Iran to return to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis.”Related...Why Trump's Decision To Bomb Iran Is A Personal Blow For Keir StarmerTrump Claims He Should've Received 5 Nobel Peace Prizes – Before Launching Strikes On IranProud Boys Said Trump Would Lose Their Support If He Goes To War With Iran
