Katherine Ryan Reacts To Furore Over Have I Got News For You C-Bomb

Katherine Ryan presenting Friday's edition of Have I Got News For YouKatherine Ryan has spoken out after making headlines about the language she used while guest presenting the latest episode of Have I Got News For You.On Friday night, the Canadian comic fronted the BBC current affairs show for the fourth time, where she was joined by guests Lewis Goodall and Maisie Adam.During the episode, Katherine introduced a segment about Sir David Beckham’s recent knighthood, to which regular panellist Ian Hislop remarked: “He was meant not to get it, wasn’t he? Because he’d been pitching for it. And it was considered bad form to be ‘desperate’.”“That’s exactly right,” Katherine responded. Reading from the script in front of her, she continued: “In 2013, when he did not get a knighthood, he emailed his PR saying, ‘They’re a bunch of cunts, I expected nothing less’...”Fellow comedian Maisie then responded: “It would have been nice and maybe poetic if Charles had got his own back just by knighting him and then going, ‘Arise, you cunt’.”Sir David and Victoria Beckham after his investiture last month“I don’t know if we are allowed to broadcast the C-word,” Katherine then added. “But you did reference Victoria Beckham earlier, and we will allow that…”After the episode aired, a number ofnews outletspublished stories featuring comments from viewers who were shocked and, in some cases, offended to hear a joke including the C-word on a show like Have I Got News For You (which airs on Friday nights at 9pm on BBC One).Responding to this, Katherine shared a screenshot of the Express’ headline “Have I Got News For You sparks uproar for broadcasting c-word multiple times” on Instagram, alongside the message: “And that was just my intro!”View this post on InstagramShe also encouraged her followers to catch up on her episode of the panel show on BBC iPlayer where – it should be noted – the C-bomb joke has been bleeped out.HuffPost UK has also contacted the BBC for comment.Back in 2017, Sir David Beckham’s private emails were leaked, including the comments mentioned by Katherine on Have I Got News For You.A representative for Sir David shot down subsequent reports suggesting the football icon had intentionally used charity work as a means to help him acquire his knighthood.READ MORE:Katherine Ryan: ‘I’m At That Age Where I’m A Bit Of An Old Straight White Man Myself’Katherine Ryan Clarifies Meghan Markle Comments After Claiming She'd Been 'Weaponised' OnlineKatherine Ryan Names 1 Area That Still Needs To Improve For Women On British TV
