Keir Starmer Rejects Donald Trump's Claim The BBC Is 'Corrupt' Amid Bias Row

Keir Starmer and Donald Trump are at odds over the BBC.Keir Starmer has rejected Donald Trump’s claim that the BBC is “corrupt” after two of its senior executives quit over a bias row.Downing Street insisted the broadcaster plays “a vital role in an age of disinformation”.Trump hit out at the corporation following the resignations of director general Tim Davie and Deborah Turness, the chief executive of BBC News. That came after current affairs programme Panorama was accused of doctoring a speech Trump made to his supporters before the Capitol riots on January 6, 2020.Samir Shah, the BBC’s chairman, is expected to issue an apology on Monday. In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said: “The TOP people in the BBC, including TIM DAVIE, the BOSS, are all quitting/FIRED, because they were caught “doctoring” my very good (PERFECT!) speech of January 6th. Thank you to The Telegraph for exposing these Corrupt “Journalists.” These are very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a Presidential Election. On top of everything else, they are from a Foreign Country, one that many consider our Number One Ally. What a terrible thing for Democracy!”Asked if Starmer agreed with the president that the BBC is corrupt, the prime minister’s spokesman said: “No. The BBC has a vital role in an age of disinformation, where there’s a clear argument for a robust impartial British news service to deliver. That case is stronger than ever.”However, he said that where errors are made, it is important the BBC “acts swiftly to maintain trust and corrects mistakes quickly when they occur”.The spokesman said the government will “continue to support the BBC as an important national institution”.The row is over an edition of Panorama broadcast just days before last year’s US election, which looked at Trump’s refusal to accept he lost to Joe Biden in 2020.The flagship current affairs programme was accused of splicing together two sections of the speech Trump made to give a misleading impression of what he actually said.In one section, Trump appears to say he was going to walk to the Capitol with them to “fight like hell”.However, Trump actually said he would walk with them “to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard”.He called on his supporters to “fight like hell” much later in the speech amid false claims that the election had been stolen from him.Trump’s spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, said the BBC was “100% fake news” and said viewers should watch GB News instead.Related...Donald Trump Slams 'Corrupt' BBC After Tim Davie Resigns Over Bias RowTrump Spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt Wasted No Time In Dancing On BBC Boss Tim Davie's GraveBBC Bosses Tim Davie And Deborah Turness Resign Over Anti-Donald Trump Bias Row
