Kemi Badenoch Accused Of Making A 'Liz Truss-Style Promise' With Latest Unfunded Policy
Kemi Badenoch.Kemi Badenoch has been accused of making a “Liz Truss-style promise” after she unveiled plans for a massive unfunded tax cut.The Tory leader said she would axe the windfall tax on the profits of oil and gas companies, even though it is forecast to raise £10.8 billion over the next five years. The windfall tax was brought in by the Tories themselves in 2022 after oil prices spiked in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But in a speech to the Scottish Conservatives’ conference in Edinburgh on Friday, Badenoch said: “There is no longer a windfall to tax. It has long gone. And the longer this regressive tax on one of our most successful industries remains, the more damaging it becomes.“Labour have extended and increased this tax. They are killing this industry.“And frankly if it is allowed to remain in place until 2030, as is Labour’s current plan, there will be no industry left to tax.”But a Labour spokesperson said: “Another day, another unfunded spending commitment from the Conservatives. Kemi Badenoch has not said how she would fund this pledge, which would cost £10.8 billion over the next five years.“The Conservatives and Nigel Farage’s party are competing for how many Liz Truss-style promises they can make. Their reckless plans would mean billions more in borrowing, pushing up people’s mortgages, rents and bills.”Related...Rachel Reeves Monsters Nigel Farage For Backing Liz Truss's Disastrous Mini-BudgetVictoria Derbyshire Skewers Senior Tory Who Won't Say Sorry For Liz TrussLaura Kuenssberg Calls Out Top Tory After He Refuses To Apologise For Liz Truss's Mini-Budget
