Kemi Badenoch's Plan To Leave ECHR Torn Apart With 1 Rather Obvious Point
Britain's Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch attends a concert to mark the 80th Anniversary of V-E Day at Horse Guards Parade, London, Thursday May 8, 2025. Kemi Badenoch’s plan to take the UK out of the European Convention on Human Rights has been brutally mocked for missing a rather obvious point. The Tory leader announced on the eve of the Conservatives’ annual conference in Manchester that this was “necessary to protect our borders, our veterans and our citizens”.The Telegraph then questioned Badenoch’s decision in an interview by pointing out that it could make the UK an international pariah like Russia and Belarus, neither of whom are part of the ECHR.She replied: “Canada’s not in the ECHR. They’re not a pariah. Neither is Australia, neither is the US or New Zealand.“We need to stop using these silly arguments to stop us from doing the right thing.”But a Labour source was quick to mock Badenoch’s argument, telling HuffPost UK: “Congratulations to Kemi for noticing that the US and NZ aren’t in Europe.“It’s this keen analytical mind that has the Conservatives languishing at 15% [in the opinion polls].“In Europe, only Russia and Belarus aren’t in the ECHR – has anyone at the Conservatives stopped to wonder why?”Asked if Labour would consider leaving the ECHR on Sky News, the home secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “We don’t think it’s necessary, we have already made that judgement call.”She said it underpins several of the removal agreements the UK has – so the Tories must explain how they would proceed with those deals too.The cabinet minister continued: “I’m afraid to say the Tories have zero credibility in this area. They were in government for 14 years, they’ve suddenly discovered a zeal for reform which they did not have when they were in office.“And they really do need to explain with immigration enforcement, which we already have in this country [although] they might not know about it because they barely availed themselves of it when they were in office.“Removals of foreign offenders were down under the Conservative Party, they’ve all gone up after a year of the Labour government.”Lib Dem leader Ed Davey also slammed Badenoch’s announcement, saying: “Kemi Badenoch has chosen to back Nigel Farage and join Vladimir Putin by leaving the European Convention on Human Rights – a proud British creation championed by Churchill that protects everyone’s rights and freedoms.“This will do nothing to stop the boats or fix our broken immigration system – problems caused by the last Conservative Government that Badenoch still hasn’t apologised for.“I say to former One Nation Conservatives who have been abandoned by their party’s lurch to the extremes: you have a home with us. The Liberal Democrats will always fight to defend our fundamental British freedoms and the rule of law.”It’s worth noting that Badenoch used to say it was a bad idea to take the UK out of the ECHR during last year’s leadership election.Writing on X on October 29 in 2024, she said: “Leaving the ECHR is not a silver bullet. We need to rewire the whole system, from end to end. It’s broken. Easy answers today just mean bigger problems tomorrow.” Related...Kemi Badenoch Says She Would Take Britain Out Of The ECHR.
