Labour Condemned As A 'Moral Void' As Starmer Vows To Remove Asylum 'Golden Ticket'

(AP Photo/Kin Cheung)Keir Starmer has been condemned over his decision to withdraw certain rights from migrants who have been granted asylum in the UK.In a bid to deter the criticism he has drawn over high immigration numbers – and take the wind out of Reform UK’s sails – the prime minister has declared that “settlement must be earned by contributing to our country”.Asylum seekers would have to “earn” the right to live in the UK by proving they can “contribute” to British society, and would no longer be allowed to automatically bring family members to Britain. The prime minister has described these rights as a “golden ticket” attracting people to Britain. But, despite what Starmer says, not everyone sees this as a “tolerant and fair approach to migration”.Independent migration policy researcher Zoe Gardner suggested it was proof this government is a “moral void, a stinking darkness, an empty hollow of cowardice and contempt”.Others on social media claimed there never was “a golden ticket”, and questioned the ethics of this decision – especially considering out that Starmer took aim at Nigel Farage just this week for his “racist” plans for mass deportations.People recognised as refugees fleeing persecution & granted the right to live in the UK to be denied the right to be joined safely by their spouse & children. This Labour govt is a moral void, a stinking darkness, an empty hollow of cowardice & contempt. #r4todaypic.twitter.com/20F2vYTksq— Zoe Gardner (@ZoeJardiniere) October 2, 2025there never was a golden ticket.. ffs stop listening to farage— baz (@nightingales2_2) October 2, 2025Curious, people who settled in the UK before didn't contribute to our 'national success?'I never thought I'd reach levels of disgust with another Prime Minister as I had with Boris Johnson, but your swing to the populist right with this -island of strangers - language really is…— Farrukh (@implausibleblog) October 2, 2025I’m old enough to remember when Starmer addressed Labour Party conference just this week and condemned Reform for racist populism! What’s this then? https://t.co/NZ4wk17LuD— Manchester Mal (@Malcolm1818) October 2, 2025Those who think of themselves as "centrists" in reactionary times are at the centre of the reactionary BS. This new Labour policy is presented as a riposte to Farageism but anyone can see it's a validation of the latter's cruelty. https://t.co/XqaNv5moag— Yo Zushi (@YoZushi81) October 2, 2025You are not any better than Reform @Keir_Starmer You take page after page from their playbook instead of standing for the values of the left.https://t.co/ZVaynEzxNv— Ulla Rajala 💗 #Dig4Arch 🇺🇦 (@UllaMR) October 2, 2025Jon Featonby, the chief policy analyst at the Refugee Council, told the Guardian that similar interventions from the Tory government failed. He said: “The previous government tried and failed to put people off taking risky journeys by reducing the rights of refugees once they were in the UK, restricting both family reunion and settlement. This approach didn’t work then and there is no evidence to suggest it will work now.”Kolbassia Haoussou, a director at the charity Freedom from Torture, also told the newspaper: “These measures are taken straight from the populist playbook the government itself has condemned.”Related...Starmer Vows To End Asylum 'Golden Ticket' In New Immigration CrackdownWes Streeting Accuses Nigel Farage Of Planning To Deport NHS Staff In Immigration CrackdownA Cabinet Minister Has Branded Nigel Farage Racist Over His Immigration Plans
