Lily Allen Insists New Release West End Girl Is Not A 'Revenge' Album
Lily AllenLily Allen is maintaining that her confessional new release West End Girl shouldn’t be considered a “revenge” album. On Friday, the chart-topping singer unveiled her fifth album after a seven-year break from the pop scene, which she’s said was partly inspired by the breakdown of her marriage to Stranger Things star David Harbour. To promote the album, Lily recently spoke to Interview magazine, during which editor Mel Ottenberg questioned if her new era should be considered a “revenge tour”.“It isn’t,” she insisted with a laugh. “I mean, I wrote this record in 10 days in December and I feel very differently about the whole situation now.“We all go through breakups and it’s always fucking brutal. But I don’t think it’s that often that you feel inclined to write about it while you’re in it.”She continued: “That’s what’s fun about this record; it’s viscerally like going through the motions. At the time [of recording it], I was really trying to process things and that’s great in terms of the album, but I don’t feel confused or angry now. I don’t need revenge.”After pointing out that “some of” West End Girl is “based on truth” while other parts are “fantasy”, she added: “It’s not a cruel album. I don’t feel like I’m being mean. It was just the feelings I was processing at the time.”Towards the end of the conversation, Lily was asked if the album helped her get through her breakup, but she confirmed: “I checked into a treatment centre six weeks afterwards. That got me out of the funk.”Much has already been made in the media about some of West End Girl’s more salacious moments, as Lily takes on the role of a protagonist who hesitantly agrees to an open relationship with her husband, who continues to break the arrangement that they had agreed on.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Lily Allen (@lilyallen)The Sheezus singer recently told Perfect magazine that her new album is “autofiction”, while in a prior interview with British Vogue, she said her new songs were “inspired by what went on” in her relationship with her famous ex, albeit with artistic licence applied.Meanwhile, the Official Charts Company has revealed that Lily is currently on track to have three songs from West End Girl – Pussy Palace, Madeline and the album’s title track – chart within the top 40 this week, with the album itself on course to hit number four based solely on digital sales and streams.Read Lily Allen and Mel Ottenberg’s full conversation in Interview magazine here.READ MORE:On The Jaw-Dropping West End Girl, Lily Allen Sets A New Bar For The Confessional Break-Up AlbumWoman Claiming To Have Inspired Lily Allen's Madeline Reacts To The SongDavid Harbour Speaks Out About Lily Allen Split For The First Time
