Monster Season 4: Here's Everything We Know About The Lizzie Borden Story
Monster star Charlie Hunnam in character as Ed Gein As the buzz around (and, indeed, backlash to) the latest season of Ryan Murphy’s Monster is slowly starting to slow down, fans of the divisive true crime series might be pondering what’s next for the franchise?Well, the good news is that Netflix has already announced that a fourth season of the anthology series is now in the works, and it’s going to be markedly different to the first three iterations.Intrigued? Well, here’s everything we know about the new season so far…What will season 4 of Netflix’s Monster be about? After the first three seasons centred around Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menéndez brothers and Ed Gein (with varying levels of controversy), the fourth will focus on the true story of Lizzie Borden. This marks the first time Monster has featured a female protagonist, as well as the first time the show has dived further back in time than the 20th century. In the late 1800s, Lizzie Borden was infamously tried for murdering her father and stepmother with an axe in Fall River, Massachusetts. She was eventually acquitted of the killing, and no one else was ever charged.More than 100 years later, the case is still much-discussed, with plenty of theories as to what really happened, with past screen adaptations featuring the likes of Elizabeth Montgomery, Christina Ricci and Chloë Sevigny as Lizzie Borden.A photograph of Lizzie Borden in 1890Who will be in the new Lizzie Borden season of Monster on Netflix? It’s well-documented that Ryan Murphy loves platforming so-called “nepo babies”, with the upcoming season of Monster being the latest example, with Ella Beatty – the daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening – the latest actor to play Lizzie Borden.Ella previously starred in another anthology series in the Ryan Murphy-verse, playing Kerry O’Shea in the second season of Feud.Ella BeattyShe’ll be joined in season four of Monster by Charlie Hunnam, who most recently played Ed Gein in the show’s most controversial iteration, with the former Queer As Folk star portraying Lizzie Borden’s father, Andrew.Bafta nominee Rebecca Hall will play Lizzie Borden’s stepmother, Abby, while Billie Lourd will play her sister.Like Ella, Billie has collaborated with Ryan Murphy multiple times in the past, including in Scream Queens, American Horror Story and Mid-Century Modern.Billie – whose mum was the late Carrie Fisher – has also appeared in the Star Wars movies, The Last Showgirl and Booksmart.Completing the cast confirmed so far will be another star of The Ed Gein Story, Vicky Krieps, as the Borden family’s housekeeper, while Jessica Barden will play the actor Nance O’Neil, whose friendship with Lizzie Borden was – and, indeed, remains – the source of much gossip.Charlie Hunnam and Ryan MurphyWhen will Monster season 4 be released?According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming on the new episodes began in early October, just days after the third season of Monster premiered on Netflix. The first two seasons of Monster arrived on the service in late September of 2022 and 2024, respectively, white the most recent iteration debuted in early October 2025.So, while we’re still a long way off a release date for the Lizzie Borden season, it’s safe to assume that we should expect it to arrive shortly before October 2026.What have the cast and crew of Monster said about the Lizzie Borden season?Ryan Murphy told Variety recently that the fourth iteration of his polarising franchise would be “a female Monster season”.“It talks not just about Lizzie, but other infamous women who were branded as monsters,” he claimed, citing Countess Elizabeth Báthory and Aileen Wuornos as two examples.“There [are] many different monsters that float through the season. This has the same approach: Profiling famous women who have been labeled as one thing, and we ask the question: ‘Really, do you think so?’.”Meanwhile, Ella said in July that she “cannot believe” she “gets to work with geniuses” like Rebecca Hall and Vicky Krieps, three months before production got underway. Is there a trailer for the new season of Monster? Not just yet, no. The closest thing we’ve got is this photo of Ella posing with fellow Monster alum Charlie Hunnam that was shared by Netflix to commemorate production on the new season getting underway…You've met Ed Gein, now meet Lizzie Borden.
