Nadine Dorries Has Joined Reform UK. Are There Any Ex-Tories They Won't Accept?
Nadine Dorries when she joined Boris Johnson's cabinet in 2021.Boris Johnson-loving gaffe-machine Nadine Dorries has joined Reform UK, begging the question: Are there any ex-Tories the party won’t accept? The former cabinet minister, who quit as a Conservative MP in 2023 in protest at not being given a peerage, declared that her former party was “dead” as she jumped ship on Thursday night. Her announcement came as Reform UK members gather in Birmingham for the party’s annual conference.Dorries joins an ever-growing list of failed right-wing former Tory ministers who have decided to throw their lot in with Reform as the party continues to lead in the polls.Others include Dame Andrea Jenkyns, who infamously once gave the middle finger to protesters outside Downing Street, and Jake Berry, who was briefly Conservative chairman under Liz Truss.Recruiting an army of failed ex-Tories would appear to be an odd way for Reform UK to present itself as an anti-establishment party committed to doing politics differently. It also came a day after Reform leader Nigel Farage lavished praise on Margaret Thatcher – the former Tory prime minister who is still seen as a hate figure in traditional Labour heartlands.“The time for action is now and I believe that the only politician who has the answers, the knowledge and the will to deliver is Nigel Farage,” Dorries said as she announced her defection.Awkwardly for the Reform leader, a tweet was quickly unearthed of him mocking Dorries for defending then-PM Johnson as his government was engulfed in scandal in 2022. He said: “I had the misfortune of watching and listening to Nadine Dorries this morning. If she is the PM’s defence then he really is a goner.”I had the misfortune of watching and listening to Nadine Dorries this morning. If she is the PM's defence then he really is a goner.— Nigel Farage MP (@Nigel_Farage) February 5, 2022As culture secretary, Dorries piloted the Online Safety Act through parliament – a law which Reform has said it will scrap if it wins the next general election. No wonder a Liberal Democrat source said: “We don’t know who to feel more sorry for, Kemi Badenoch or Nigel Farage.”Social media users pointed out that Dorries’ defection was not quite the political win for Reform that the party claimed it is.If you were a Reform supporter, I don’t know why you’d want ex-Tory MPs to defect to you given the drubbing they just took. And if you did want them, you’d want… well, the good ones, no?I don’t think Nadine Dorries is a major get.— Benedict Spence (@BenedictSpence) September 4, 2025Conservatives response to the news. https://t.co/x24OxoP0Eqpic.twitter.com/PFT2I3xSw7— Thomas Evans @Renewal2030 (@ThomasEvansAdur) September 4, 2025BREAKING NEWS 🚨Nadine Dorries has defected to Reform 😆Nice to keep the unhinged all in one place pic.twitter.com/nRrF9tayBd— Dean 🇬🇧🇪🇺🏳️🌈 (@deanbegley1) September 4, 2025Fair play to Reform; they’re gathering some great political minds.
