Netanyahu Orders Gaza City Residents To Relocate Amid Israeli Strikes – But There's Nowhere Left To Go
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits the site of a shooting attack at a bus stop in Jerusalem, Monday, Sept. 8, 2025. Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered Palestinians in Gaza City to evacuate hours before Israel says it will be ramping up its airstrikes – but residents have “nowhere to go”.On Monday, the Israeli prime minister said: “I say to the residents of Gaza, I take this opportunity and listen to me carefully: You have been warned – leave now.”Israel also dropped leaflets advising people to evacuate from Gaza’s largest city to what the IDF (Israeli Defence Force) calls a humanitarian zone in the south. That means as many as a million people will have to leave – but the UN has warned that nowhere in the Palestinian territory is safe right now. These latest upcoming strikes are, according to Israel, part of its last warnings to Hamas that it will destroy the entirety of Gaza unless militants accept the US’s latest ceasefire proposal, free all remaining hostages and surrender. As Israeli defence minister Israel Katz wrote on X: “A mighty hurricane will hit the skies of Gaza City today, and the roofs of the terror towers will shake.”Israel claims this is all part of its ongoing efforts to eliminate Hamas completely, despite the growing international backlash from its allies over the staggering number of civilian casualties. But, as the humanitarian director and team leader for Save the Children in Gaza’s Deir al Balah said, there is just nowhere else for Gaza City residents to go.“The situation is desperate,” Rachel Cummings told the BBC Radio 4′s Today programme, explaining how the roads are packed on the route to Khan Yunis with people “carrying whatever they can”.She said: “In Khan Yunis, where people are being directed to travel to, there’s no space. It’s very concerning. It’s a really significant move for people to leave Gaza, of course, but there is nowhere for them to go.”Since Israel first blockaded Gaza and began bombarding the enclave, more than 62,000 people have been killed.Repeated calls for evacuations means the population has been moved time and time again – for some, 10 times or more – since the Israeli offensive began.Around 90% of Gaza’s 1.9 million population has been displaced in the last 23 months, according to the UN.When BBC presenter Anna Foster asked if many people do not have the physical and mental strength to relocate again, Cummings said: “Some of them have literally lost count of the number of times they’ve been forcibly displaced – but of course there is nowhere for them to go.“This is a really challenging decision they have to make – they have to leave but there is nowhere for them to go!“This is very concerning, because the bombardment and the escalation that we’re seeing in the city is significant. ”She said Save the Children is trying to secure land for people to move into, but “there are very very few options for people to be safe if any, in Gaza.”Even as international horror over the war grows, Netanyahu is still pushing for what he describes as “total victory over Hamas”.Meanwhile, Hamas has said it intends to hold onto its Israeli captives until any negotiations are complete, Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza and offer a “clear announcement of an end to the war”.Existing regional tensions escalated back in October 2023 when Hamas militants killed 1,200 people on Israeli soil and took a further 250 hostage.Israel declared war on Hamas, initiated airstrikes on the enclave and imposed a humanitarian blockade. Multiple international organisations, like the World Health Organisation, the World Food Programme, UNICEF and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN have since declared a man-made famine for the first time in Gaza.Related...Famine In Gaza Is Underway Amid Israel's US-Backed Siege, Experts ConfirmNo.10 Condemns Israel Over Latest Killing Of Journalists In GazaA US Ambassador Ranted About The UK After It Criticised Israel.
