'Nobody Cares!' Kemi Badenoch Rejects Criticism Over Her Latest Performance In The Commons
Tory leader Kemi BadenochKemi Badenoch has hit out at her critics who have torn into her latest attempt to question Keir Starmer in the Commons. The Tory leader came under fire during prime minister’s questions on Wednesday after she appeared to miss Starmer’s key admission that Labour were U-turning on their changes to winter fuel payments. The government sparked major backlash – including from their own backbenchers – when they axed the £300 payment for 10 million pensioners in the autumn Budget. So it was a significant moment when the PM unexpectedly told a Labour backbencher on Wednesday that the government now wants to make more pensioners eligible for the scheme. His remarks even prompted a major reaction from across the House.Moments later, the leader of the opposition asked Starmer a very similar question: “Is he planning to U-turn on winter fuel cuts?”The PM just pointed to his previous answer, and confirmed he would look at the threshold. But Badenoch doubled down and said: “I wonder how the public feel about a man who cannot give a straight answer to a simple question.”So on BBC Breakfast this morning, presenter Charlie Stayt put it to Badenoch that she “did not hear it” when Starmer announced his U-turn.“I don’t know why people would think that. Of course I did, I asked him three questions on it,” she replied.“What’s been suggested is there was a lapse in that time, that one of your MPs sitting next to you had to alerted you to the fact that had happened,” the presenter said.“Not at all,” Badenoch insisted. “I was going to ask him questions about winter fuel anyway, and I heard him answer a backbencher’s question and I referred to that.”She continued: “It doesn’t matter whether I ask at question one or question four. Nobody cares which order of question it is in, the important thing is I asked him three questions about it.”Stayt pointed out that parliamentary sketch writers have suggested Badenoch missed Starmer’s answer because it was hidden in a longer response.“No, not at all,” she said. “I’m the one who is standing there, I know what I am doing.”Badenoch continued: “Lots of people who have never ever done PMQs all have their own suggestions, ‘oh you should have asked this and said it this way.’“There are lots of people who want to tell me know to do my job, I’m doing my job the way I think it should be done and we’re getting Labour to U-turn.”'There are lots of people who want to tell me how to do my job'Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch was asked on #BBCBreakfast about her performance at Prime Minister Questionshttps://t.co/TfZNONwQlFpic.twitter.com/3heU5qXMrw— BBC Breakfast (@BBCBreakfast) May 23, 2025The exchange comes after Badenoch’s popularity hit a new low, according to an Ipsos survey published this week. The poll showed just 17% of the public have a favourable view towards her – that is the lowest percentage ever recorded for her by the pollster, and a worse rating than both Boris Johnson (26%) and Rishi Sunak (21%).Related...Kemi Badenoch's Popularity Hits New Low As Tory Crisis Deepens'Kalamity Kemi': Badenoch Mocked After Getting Wales And Scotland Mixed Up'Take Kemi's Phone Off Her': Labour Minister Roasts Tory Leader's Response To Trade Deal
