Peter Mandelson Fighting For Survival Over Friendship With Paedophile Jeffrey Epstein
Keir Starmer and Peter Mandelson during a welcome reception at the ambassador's residence in February.Peter Mandelson is fighting to save his political career over his links to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The UK’s ambassador to Washington has admitted there are more “embarrassing” revelations to come about his friendship with the billionaire financier, who died in 2019.Keir Starmer, who appointed the Labour peer to the plum diplomatic role, was forced to say he still has “confidence” in Lord Mandelson as he was mauled over the row by Kemi Badenoch at prime minister’s questions. An alleged “birthday book” released earlier this week by the House Oversight Committee in America contained a message to from Mandelson in which he described Epstein as his “best pal”.Some of Epstein’s victims have called for Mandelson to be sacked from his ambassador role.In an interview with The Sun’s Harry Cole released on Wednesday, Mandelson said: “I have no doubt at all that there’s a lot of traffic, correspondence, exchanges, emails between us. “And we know those are going to surface, we know they’re going to come out, we know they’re going to be very embarrassing and we know that I am going profoundly to regret ever having met him and been introduced to him in the first place.“But I can’t rewrite history. What I can do is express my profound sympathy for those who have been trafficked by him and secondly I can accept, yes I can accept, that I continued my association with him for too long.”At PMQs, Badenoch referred to Poland having to shoot down Russian drones which had entered their airspace last night. She said: “Now more than ever, we need our ambassador to Washington fully focused on this issue and liaising closely with America. Does the prime minister have full confidence in Peter Mandelson?”The PM replied: “Let me start by saying the victims of Epstein are at the forefront of our minds. He was a despicable criminal who committed the most heinous crimes and destroyed the lives of so many women and girls.“The ambassador has repeatedly expressed his deep regret for his association with him. He is right to do so. I have confidence in him, and he is playing an important role in the UK-US relationship.”He added: “Full due process was followed during this appointment, as it is with all ambassadors. The ambassador has repeatedly expressed his deep regret, he is right to do so, he’s now playing an important part in the US-UK relationship.”Badenoch asked whether it was still “tenable” for Lord Mandelson to remain in post. The PM said: “The relationship between the US and the UK is one of our foremost relationships, and I have confidence in the ambassador in the role that he is doing.”Related...Keir Starmer Backs Peter Mandelson Despite Him Calling Jeffrey Epstein His 'Best Pal'Peter Mandelson Confronted By Sky News Reporter Over His Links To Jeffrey EpsteinNew US Ambassador Peter Mandelson Tells Reporter To 'F*** Off' When Pressed Over Epstein Links
