'Putin's Pet!' Nigel Farage Heckled While Proposing ECHR Withdrawal In Commons

Britain's Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage reacts during the Reform party's annual conference at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, England, Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025.Nigel Farage was repeatedly called out by fellow MPs while he was speaking in the Commons today and trying to champion withdrawal from the ECHR.The Reform UK leader was speaking before MPs voted down his 10-minute rule bill which would take the UK out of the European Convention on Human Rights. He argued that the ECHR is “unfinished business” and that “Brexit cannot be completed while we’re subject to a foreign court”.While most of the Labour and Conservative benches were empty for his speech, the Liberal Democrats and other opposition MPs from smaller parties turned up – mainly to heckle Farage, it seems. When he started talking about Brexit, a few MPs pointed out how Farage had “promised to leave” the UK back in 2017 if the EU withdrawal was a disaster. The Reform UK leader tried to quieten them by saying, “children, be quiet” – prompting a wave of laughter and surprised noises around the chamber.Farage soon resumed, telling his colleagues: “We are not sovereign all the while we are part of the ECHR, the European Council and its associated court, it’s as simple as that.”But a different MP shouted out: “Putin’s pet!”Farage replied: “It’s marvellous to see the intellectual levels of debate in this place, it really is.”Madam deputy speaker Judith Cummins then had to intervene, reminding MPs Farage had the floor for his 10-minute rule bill. When he started claiming that even if all MPs were to vote on changing the rules around who could access the UK via small boats, they could be overruled by the ECHR – prompting plenty of laughter and protests from his opponents.Farage’s bill was defeated by 154 votes to 96, a majority of 58.Reform’s head of policy Zia Yusuf later criticised the backlash on social media. He wrote on X: “The behaviour of MPs towards Nigel Farage today was a disgrace.“We will take great pleasure in ensuring the largest group of MPs ever are turfed out in a single election next time around. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.”🚨 WATCH: Nigel Farage is repeatedly heckled by Labour and Lib Dem MPs as he lays out a proposed ECHR Withdrawal BillMP: "Putin's pet!"Farage: "It's marvellous to see the intellectual levels of debate in this place, it really is" pic.twitter.com/WvskFBFgJH— Politics UK (@PolitlcsUK) October 29, 2025Related...'A Grave Political Error': Tories Hit Out At Kemi Badenoch Over Plan To Leave ECHRKemi Badenoch's Plan To Leave ECHR Torn Apart With 1 Rather Obvious PointKemi Badenoch Says She Would Take Britain Out Of The ECHR.
