So THAT's Why You Should Always Wash Gym Clothes Inside Out
Not only are you not meant to wash your jeans all that often, but when you do, it’s important to turn them inside out. That’s because, denim giants Levi’s explain, “This simple (but usually neglected) step protects the outer colour from fading and minimises direct contact with chemicals and detergents”. But your favourite flares shouldn’t be the only thing you invert before lobbing them in your machine’s drum. It turns out the same goes for gym gear, too, for slightly gross reasons. Why should you turn gym clothes inside out before washing them?Well, one reason is simple: you sweat a lot when you’re wearing your gym clothes, and (obviously) perspiration begins from the inside out. So, Nike says, you should “give your washing machine access to the most bacteria-ridden surfaces of your clothing by turning your bottoms, tops and undergarments inside out before you put them in the wash.“That’ll help maximise your washing machine’s effectiveness, since odour-causing bacteria will build up the most on the inside of your clothes.” But, Good Housekeeping points out, that’s not the only reason. The added step also prevents bobble-causing friction and keeps the colour of your athletic gear looking better for longer. And turning the garments inside-out can also prevent them from becoming misshapen or getting covered in detergent stains, Whirlpool adds.Any other tips? Yes. Nike says that particularly stinky clothes can benefit from a quick 20-30-minute vinegar soak before their spin in the washing machine. And the sports clothing company stresses the importance of airing your gym clothes out as soon after your workout as possible. This, they say, is because, “Keeping your workout clothing stuffed in your backpack or gym bag can cause mould or mildew to form and lead to nasty odours”.Try hanging them up to air-dry completely before adding them to your laundry pile for the freshest, best results. Related...Clothes Smell Musty After A Wash?
